Chapter 10

The couple’s routine did not change but from time to time, they make sure to have dinner together with their respective family.

On one occasion though Richard begged off from their dinner. Though disheartened as it is their 5^th anniversary and she was expecting to celebrate it with just the two of them.

She was of course having a monologue..

‘Maya, okay lang yan, baka busy lang talaga. Ngayon lang naman nangyari yan.’

<pouts and sad face> ‘Nakalimutan ata ni Ricky’

‘Hindi Maya, dapat hindi ganun. Baka may importante lang talaga syang kailangang tapusin sa trabaho.’

‘Tama Maya, nakalimutan mo atang president ng kumpanya ang bofyfriend mo.’

‘Hay Maya! Ikaw talaga!’

Maya then jumped on the knock on her door.

“Maya?”

“Po? Nay?”

“Sasama ka ba sa amin o may lakad kayo ni Richard?”

Maya opens the door.

“Nay, sasama na lang po ako. Nag-cancel po si Ricky eh. May kailangan daw po siyang tapusin.”

“Ah ganun ba? O sya magbihis ka na at aalis na tayo. At ayusin mo yan mukha mo, naku pag nakita ka ng kuya mo paniguradong aalaskahin ka nun.”

Maya smiled at her mother.

“Sige po nay.”

Maya was deep in her thought when her dad stopped the car. She was more surprised that they were in ‘their’ restaurant.

“Tay, bakit nyo po alam tong resto na to?”

“Nak, di ko alam tong resto na to, sinundan ko lang ang kuya mo.”

Only then she did realize they were on convoy with her brother, nonetheless she was still surprised why they are in this place. This is not the place her family would frequent. The place is too quiet for her family, more so for her brother.

“Bakit kaya dito tayo dinala ni kuya.”

Maya wondered why she wasn’t getting any response from her parents when she saw them already outside the car. She hurriedly went down. She had no time to ask her brother as they were already being ushered in their table. When they reached their table, she got another surprise. They were going to have dinner with Ricky’s parents.

“Hi tita, hi tito.”

“Oh hija, I told you practice calling me mama.”

“Esmeralda. I told you, wag mo kulitin si Maya sa bagay na yan. It will come naturally, right iha?”

Maya doesn’t how to respond so she just smiled.

“You could practice calling me papa though.”

“Roberto!”

“Kidding, just kidding.”

Don Roberto joked making the rest laughed.

“Balae, kanina pa ba kayo? Nagorder na ba kayo?”

“No balae, we just arrived too. Si Lem ang nagdrive sa amin kaya mas nauna kami nakapasok.”

Maya on the other hand was quiet, too quiet for her brother not to noticed.

“Maya, may problema ba?”

“Ah kuya, wala naman, pero may itatanong ako sayo, labas muna tayo saglit.”

“Mamaya na, order muna tayo. Gutom na ko eh.”

Maya knows she cannot force her brother to do what she wants once he talks about his tummy. James and food are secret lovers, as what she would always tease him. Maya decided then to interrogate him once they are done with food. She is really disturbed with what’s happening that she can’t help but be bothered. Something in her gut feeling tells her that something was off.

“Maya?”

Maya was startled from her reverie.

“Are you okay iha? Kanina ka pa tahimik, something bothering you o ayaw mo kaming kasama?”

“Ay hindi po tita, hindi po. May iniisip lang po.”

“Am sorry iha for my son. Kaya lang he really needs to go to Clark to check on the progress of the hangar. We seem to be having a lot of delays and we cannot afford that. We have partners counting on us to deliver services the soonest.”

“Ay tito, wala po un. Naiitindihan ko naman po un. Trabaho po un eh.”

“Ah, kaya pala ang tamlay ng kapatid ko.”

And everyone laughed at her expense, she just smiled.  Maya forced herself to join in the conversation. They were having a great conversation when a very familiar sound of music was heard. Maya looked for the source and got a bit surprised.

“Ricky?”
